September 22, 2007: Investigation at the Virginia School of the Arts, formerly known as the Garland Rhoades School
Claims at this school for artistically gifted students include disembodied voices and laughter on the third floor, the feeling of being watched, moving shadows, etc. There have been two natural deaths and one accidental death on the school grounds within the last ten years, though there have been no reports of paranormal activity that seem to be specifically related to these incidents…
Our investigation incorporated the entire building and grounds. One team centered on the third floor with audio and video to research the sounds of children laughing. Another team explored the boiler room and lower floors, including the auditorium.
There were several special considerations on this investigation due to the age and architecture of this site. There are very high ceilings with overhead ducts and also floor radiators, which can cause drafts and spontaneous temperature fluctuations. Many of the ceilings are covered in tin ceiling tiles, which we were concerned might cause abnormal EMF readings. Another EMF consideration is that there is a train tunnel that runs about twenty yards from the west end of the building- trains can sometimes cause Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) fields, which have been traced to feelings of paranoia, hallucinations, and even physical symptoms such as nausea.
Other than two very high EMF readings near the schools electrical boxes in the cafeteria and in a studio loft (as expected), we encountered no significant EMF fluctuations. A couple of our investigators experienced the feeling of being watched in these areas, which we attributed to the high EMF in an enclosed space in the studio loft.
Due to time restraints, we did not cover the school grounds as thoroughly as we would have liked. Our evidence review produced no significant video or audio evidence, though we would love to go back for a follow-up, more extended stay.
